A typical student in this program would attend classes at a remote classroom in Virginia or at several out-of-state locations, primarily certain industries and community colleges which support this program. Receive sites provide administrative support, limited library facilities, (or you may make use of the on-grounds library services for off-campus students) computer access, and special classrooms. Materials distribution and homework submission are handled by mail, e-mail, and/or web sites.

Through the Commonwealth Graduate Engineering Program, a working engineer can earn a master's degree in 3 to 5 years. Application is made to the school from which you wish to obtain your degree. Students can combine courses from the originating universities and the local supporting institutions to create individually appropriate programs of study. The application process is on-going; however, applications must be complete by the end of the first semester of study.

All courses are regular university offerings. The degree, a Master of Engineering, is the same that would be earned by an on-grounds student. Students in the off-campus program are invited to attend graduation ceremonies when they have completed the program.
